Layering Fragrances Step 1: Choose a base fragrance

The first step to layering fragrances is to choose a base fragrance. A base fragrance is the foundation of your scent, and it is usually the strongest, richest, and longest-lasting perfume in your layering combination. A base fragrance can also set the tone and mood of your scent, whether you want it to be warm, cozy, sensual, or mysterious.

Some examples of base fragrances are:

  • Musk: Musk is a classic base fragrance that adds warmth, depth, and sensuality to your scent. It is also very versatile and can blend well with almost any other fragrance. Musk can be animalic, floral, or synthetic, depending on the source and composition. Some popular musk perfumes are Narciso Rodriguez For Her, Kayali Musk 12, and Al-Rehab White Musk.
  • Vanilla: Vanilla is another popular base fragrance that adds sweetness, comfort, and coziness to your scent. It is also very inviting and appealing, as it is one of the most universally liked scents. Vanilla can be creamy, spicy, or woody, depending on the type and quality. Some popular vanilla perfumes are Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Le Parfum, Maison Mataha Escapade Gourmande, and Kayali Vanilla 28.
  • Oud: Oud is a rare and exotic base fragrance that adds richness, complexity, and mystery to your scent. It is also very distinctive and memorable, as it is one of the most expensive and sought-after scents in the world. Oud is derived from the resinous wood of the agar tree, and it can have a smoky, woody, or leathery aroma. Some popular oud perfumes are Kayali OUDGASM Vanilla Oud, Frank Oliver Oud Vanilla, and MFK Oud Satin Mood.

FYI: I am not a big fan of Oud, but Kayali OUDGASM Vanilla is a really good introduction to oud if you’re like me.

To find a base fragrance that suits you, you can consider your skin type, preference, and season. For example, if you have dry skin, you might want to choose a base fragrance that is more moisturizing and long-lasting, such as an oil-based or alcohol-free perfume. If you prefer a more subtle and natural scent, you might want to choose a base fragrance that is more light and fresh, such as a citrus or green perfume.

If you are layering fragrances for a specific season, you might want to choose a base fragrance that matches the weather and mood, such as a warm and spicy perfume for winter or a cool and aquatic perfume for summer. Once you have chosen your base fragrance, you can spray it lightly on your pulse points, such as your wrists, neck, and behind your ears. These are the areas where your blood vessels are close to the skin, and they can help diffuse the scent better. You can also spray the base fragrance on your chest, stomach, or lower back, as these are the areas where your body heat is higher, and they can help intensify the scent.

Layering Fragrances Step 2: Choose a middle fragrance

The second step to layering fragrances is to choose a middle fragrance. A middle fragrance is the layer that adds complexity and depth to your scent, and it is usually the lighter, softer, and more complex perfume in your layering combination. A middle fragrance can also add contrast and balance to your scent, whether you want it to be floral, fruity, spicy, or woody.

Some examples of middle fragrances are:

  • Floral: Floral is a common middle fragrance that adds femininity, elegance, and romance to your scent. It is also very diverse and varied, as there are many types of flowers and floral notes. Floral can be sweet, fresh, or powdery, depending on the flower and the blend. Some popular floral perfumes are Coach Floral, Coach Wild Rose, and Coach Floral Blush.
  • Fruity: Fruity is another common middle fragrance that adds playfulness, youthfulness, and fun to your scent. It is also very bright and cheerful, as there are many types of fruits and fruity notes. Fruity can be juicy, tangy, or creamy, depending on the fruit and the mix. Some popular fruity perfumes are Escada Sorbetto Rosso, Lancome La Vie Est Belle, and Dolce and Gabbana L’imperatrice.
  • Spicy: Spicy is a less common but more interesting middle fragrance that adds warmth, intensity, and exoticism to your scent. It is also very stimulating and captivating, as there are many types of spices and spicy notes. Spicy can be hot, sweet, or earthy, depending on the spice and the combination. Some popular spicy perfumes are Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb, Lattafa Khamrah, and Kayali Vanilla Royale.

To find a middle fragrance that complements your base fragrance, you can use a fragrance wheel or a perfume finder app. If you don’t know what or how to use a fragrance wheel or a perfume finder app, here is my article talking all about them: Fragrance Layering Tools

A fragrance wheel is a tool that shows the relationship between different fragrance families, such as floral, oriental, woody, and fresh. You can use the fragrance wheel to find a middle fragrance that belongs to the same family as your base fragrance, or to a neighboring or opposite family, depending on the effect you want to achieve. A perfume finder app is a tool that helps you discover new perfumes based on your preferences, personality, and mood. You can use the perfume finder app to find a middle fragrance that matches your base fragrance, or to a different or contrasting fragrance, depending on the result you want to create.

Once you have chosen your middle fragrance, you can spray it on top of your base fragrance, but avoid overlapping too much. You can spray the middle fragrance on the same pulse points as your base fragrance, or on different pulse points, such as your elbows, knees, or ankles. You can also spray the middle fragrance on your clothes, scarf, or hat, as these are the items that can retain the scent longer and better.

Layering Fragrances Step 3: Choose a top fragrance

The third and final step to layering fragrances is to choose a top fragrance. A top fragrance is the layer that adds brightness and freshness to your scent, and it is usually the brightest, freshest, and most uplifting perfume in your layering combination. A top fragrance can also add sparkle and personality to your scent, whether you want it to be citrus, green, or aquatic.

Some examples of top fragrances are:

  • Citrus: Citrus is a popular top fragrance that adds energy, zest, and happiness to your scent. It is also very refreshing and invigorating, as there are many types of citrus fruits and citrus notes. Citrus can be sour, sweet, or bitter, depending on the fruit and the blend. Some popular citrus perfumes are Clean Reserve Citron Fig, Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin, and Versace Bright Crystal.
  • Green: Green is another popular top fragrance that adds nature, freshness, and calmness to your scent. It is also very soothing and relaxing, as there are many types of green plants and green notes. Green can be herbal, grassy, or leafy, depending on the plant and the mix. Some popular green perfumes are Hermes Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, and Commodity Moss.
  • Aquatic: Aquatic is a less popular but more unique top fragrance that adds water, air, and freshness to your scent. It is also very clean and crisp, as there are many types of water sources and aquatic notes. Aquatic can be salty, fresh, or ozonic, depending on the water and the combination. Some popular aquatic perfumes are MAC Turquatic, Ellis Brooklyn SALT, and Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio.

To find a top fragrance that contrasts your base and middle fragrances, you can use a fragrance pyramid or a perfume quiz. If you don’t know what or how to use a fragrance pyramid or a perfume quiz, here is my article talking all about them: Fragrance Layering Tools

A fragrance pyramid is a tool that shows the structure and evolution of a perfume, from the top notes, to the heart notes, to the base notes. You can use the fragrance pyramid to find a top fragrance that belongs to a different or opposite fragrance family than your base and middle fragrances, such as a fresh top fragrance for a warm base and middle fragrance, or vice versa.

A perfume quiz is a tool that helps you find your perfect perfume based on your answers to a series of questions. You can use the perfume quiz to find a top fragrance that reflects your personality, mood, and style, such as a citrus top fragrance for a cheerful and energetic person, or a green top fragrance for a peaceful and serene person.

Once you have chosen your top fragrance, you can spray it on your hair, clothes, or in the air and walk through it. This will create a light and airy layer that will add freshness and personality to your overall scent. You can also spray the top fragrance on your pillow, sheets, or curtains, as these are the items that can create a pleasant and cozy atmosphere in your room.

Curls On Demand Tips

I know layering can be overwhelming, especially for beginners, so if you really want to get into layering, here’s a few tips:

  • Start off with layering two fragrances instead of three. Ensure that you have a base note from the list provided and choose your second fragrance from the middle and top notes provided above.
  • When starting off with layering it’s a great idea to pair fragrances that have a similar note with each other. For example: YSL Black Opium Le Perfume and Lattafa Khamrah both share a vanilla and cinnamon note, which allows this layering combo to compliment each other very well. Layering fragrances with similar notes takes the guessing game out of the art of layering and is a good way to make sure you don’t mess up.
    • Here are four (4) layering combos with only two fragrances to start you off. Each combo shares at least one (1) similar:
