

Have you heard of the 8-8-8 Rule? Well me neither…’til last week. My goal this year is to become more disciplined in life, which in turn should provide me with a better work life balance. And yo gurl has been struggling! I developed a very unhealthy work life balance over the past 2 years, due to my inability to stay on task, or take a break from a task when it takes much longer than expected to complete. I would stay up ’til the wee hours of the morning to complete a task in order to complete it.
One of my biggest problems (and there are many BIG problems) is being efficient and productive throughout the day. My mother-in-law even got me the hexagon productivity timer, to help me stay on task, and that has not worked out very well. It just seems as if the day escapes me, and I almost always never complete all the tasks I had scheduled for the day. So, I’ve been reading a lot lately on how to become more productive throughout the day.
One morning, I was scrolling on Lemon8 and read a post about the 8-8-8 Rule. So, of course I went running to my best friend Google so she can spill all the beans about this life hack/productivity hack. And I am now here to share what I’ve learned with you.
The 8-8-8 rule is a simple and effective approach to achieving work-life balance, which involves dedicating eight hours each to work, personal activities, and rest and sleep. By following this rule and prioritizing your time, you can lead a more fulfilling life both at work and outside of it.
In this article, I will explain the benefits of the 8-8-8 rule, how to apply it in your daily routine, and how to adapt it to your needs and goals.
Now, I have tried this method and let me tell you…it’s not easy to adopt, but I think it’s worth trying. I don’t know quite yet if it’s the right method for me, but I’ve been creating variations of it to see which best fits my current lifestyle. But, enough about me…Let’s get started!

You will be more focused, efficient, and motivated to complete your tasks. You will also avoid the temptation to check your work emails or messages after hours, which can interfere with your personal time and cause unnecessary stress.
- Burnout prevention: Regularly extending work hours can lead to exhaustion and decreased job satisfaction. Therefore, adhering to a 8-hour framework can mitigate the risk of burnout, ensuring that you remain passionate and engaged with your work. You will also have more energy and enthusiasm to tackle new challenges and opportunities.
- Work-life balance: A fixed work duration daily provides discipline and facilitates a healthier balance between professional and personal commitments. When work ends, the transition to personal time becomes seamless. You will have more time to pursue your hobbies, interests, and passions. You will also have more time to connect with your family and friends, which can improve your relationships and social support.
- Growth and relaxation: The leisure hours are not exclusively for relaxation. They are also an avenue for holistic development. Engaging in hobbies, personal readings, or acquiring new skills can enrich your life and expand your horizons. However, relaxation remains essential. Whether it’s unwinding with a movie, practicing meditation, or simply enjoying quiet moments, these leisure hours recharge your mind and body. You will feel more refreshed, calm, and happy.

Now that you know the benefits of the 8-8-8 rule, you might be wondering how to implement it in your daily schedule. Here are some tips and strategies to help you follow this rule:
- Set boundaries: The first step is to establish clear and firm boundaries between your work and personal time (this is where I struggle). Communicate your availability and expectations to your boss, colleagues, and clients. Let them know when you start and end your work hours, and when you are not reachable. Respect your own boundaries and avoid checking or responding to work-related messages or calls after hours. Likewise, avoid bringing personal issues or distractions into your work time. Avoiding personal distractions is especially difficult for people, like me, who work from home.
- Prioritize tasks: The second step is to prioritize your tasks according to their urgency and importance. Use tools such as calendars, planners, or apps to organize your tasks and deadlines. Start your work day with the most important and urgent tasks, and then move on to the less critical ones. Delegate or outsource tasks that are not essential or within your expertise. Learn to say no to requests or assignments that are beyond your capacity or scope.
- Manage distractions: The third step is to manage distractions that can hinder your productivity and focus. Turn off notifications, close unnecessary tabs, and mute your phone during your work hours. Avoid multitasking and stick to one task at a time. - Sleep is very important. I would suggest that you try to adjust between leisure and work, before adjusting the amount of time you have scheduled for sleep. If you must compromise on sleep, I would recommend that you get at least 6-7 hours of sleep and not make this a regular practice.

For example, you can take an extended lunch break to meet up with a friend or you can workout in the middle of the work day.
