How to Create Your Own Affirmations
The first step to using affirmations is to create your own. This might seem daunting at first, but it’s actually quite easy and fun. Here are some tips on how to brainstorm, write, and personalize your affirmations.
Brainstorm Potential Targets for Affirmations
Before you start writing your affirmations, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to focus on. Affirmations can target any area of your life, such as your self-esteem, health, relationships, career, etc. You can also use affirmations to address specific issues, such as negative thoughts, limiting beliefs, or desired outcomes.
To brainstorm potential targets for affirmations, you can ask yourself some questions, such as:
- What are some negative thoughts or beliefs that I want to change?
- What are some positive qualities or strengths that I want to enhance or acknowledge?
- What are some goals or dreams that I want to achieve or manifest?
- What are some affirmations that I have heard or read that resonate with me?
You can also use tools such as journals, vision boards, or online quizzes to help you identify your targets. The key is to be honest and specific with yourself, and to choose targets that are meaningful and relevant to you.
Write Affirmations in the Present Tense, Using Positive and Specific Language, and Avoiding Negations
Once you have your targets, you can start writing your affirmations. There are some general rules that you should follow to make your affirmations more effective and powerful. These are:
- Write your affirmations in the present tense, as if they are already true or happening. This helps you to create a positive and realistic expectation, and to align your thoughts and actions with your affirmations. For example, instead of saying “I will be confident”, say “I am confident”.
- Use positive and specific language, and avoid words that are vague, ambiguous, or conditional. This helps you to create a clear and positive image of what you want, and to avoid confusion or doubt. For example, instead of saying “I am not afraid”, say “I am brave and courageous”.
- Avoid negations, such as “not”, “no”, or “never”. These words can create a negative and counterproductive effect, as they can reinforce the opposite of what you want, or make you focus on what you don’t want. For example, instead of saying “I am not a failure”, say “I am successful and accomplished”.
Personalize Your Affirmations
Another way to make your affirmations more effective and powerful is to personalize them. This means to make them more specific and relevant to your situation, and to add some emotions or details that make them more meaningful and authentic to you. Here are some ways to personalize your affirmations:
- Use your name or a personal pronoun, such as “I”, “me”, or “my”. This helps you to create a stronger connection and identification with your affirmations, and to make them more personal and intimate. For example, instead of saying “You are beautiful”, say “I am beautiful” or “Anna, you are beautiful”.
- Add emotions or feelings, such as “happy”, “proud”, or “grateful”. This helps you to create a positive and emotional impact, and to make your affirmations more motivating and inspiring. For example, instead of saying “I have a healthy body”, say “I am happy and grateful for my healthy body”.
- Make them relevant to your situation, such as your current challenges, opportunities, or circumstances. This helps you to create a realistic and practical application, and to make your affirmations more relevant and timely. For example, instead of saying “I am a great speaker”, say “I am a great speaker at this presentation”.
How to Use Your Affirmations Effectively
Now that you have created your own affirmations, you need to know how to use them effectively. This means to repeat them regularly, at the right time, and in the right way. Here are some best practices for using your affirmations effectively.
Repeat Your Affirmations
The most important thing to do with your affirmations is to repeat them. Repeating your affirmations helps you to reinforce them in your subconscious mind, and to make them part of your reality. The more you repeat your affirmations, the more you will believe them, and the more they will influence your thoughts, feelings, and actions.
There are different ways to repeat your affirmations, such as:
- Saying them out loud, either to yourself or to someone else. This helps you to hear and feel your affirmations, and to make them more powerful and convincing.
- Using a mirror, either in your bathroom, bedroom, or anywhere else. This helps you to see and connect with yourself, and to make your affirmations more personal and intimate.
- Recording them on your phone, computer, or any other device. This helps you to listen and repeat your affirmations, and to make them more convenient and accessible.
You can also use tools such as apps, podcasts, or videos to help you repeat your affirmations. The key is to choose a method that works best for you, and that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

I use the Parrot App for recording my affirmations. It records and loops your recordings: I always record with relaxing music in the background and it’s a great way to fall asleep. What’s better than relaxing music and your own affirmations, on loop, to impress on your subconscious mind as you drift into sleep? Here is a link to the Parrot App for Android and Apple users.
- FYI: I am an Apple user, so I am not sure that the Android parrot app is the same as the Apple app. If you’re an Android user, let me know down in the comments if the Android app also loops.
Use Your Affirmations at the Right Time
Another thing to consider when using your affirmations is the timing. When you use your affirmations can make a difference in how effective they are, and how they affect your mood and performance. Here are some suggestions for when to use your affirmations:
- Use your affirmations daily, preferably in the morning or before bed. This helps you to create a positive and consistent routine, and to start or end your day on a high note.
- Use your affirmations before or after a challenging situation, such as a test, a meeting, or a difficult conversation. This helps you to prepare or recover from the situation, and to boost your confidence and resilience.
- Use your affirmations whenever you need them, such as when you feel stressed, anxious, or discouraged. This helps you to cope with negative emotions, and to change your perspective and attitude.
You can also use your affirmations whenever you feel inspired, happy, or proud. This helps you to celebrate your achievements, and to reinforce your positive self-image and self-esteem.

- My preference is to do my affirmations in the mornings as soon as I wake up and at nights when I’m about to fall asleep. It is believed that the subconscious mind is more impressionable when you are in a sleepy state due to the increase of theta waves and when you’re about to wake up due to alpha waves.1 2
- I also love falling asleep to my recorded affirmations on loop, using the app I talked about in my previous tip. This is believed to be a great technique, because when you are asleep your conscious mind is not active, so it is unable to interfere with the affirmations impressed on it. The subconscious mind is said to be more active during sleep and is believed to be very impressionable and is unable to logically reject an affirmation like the conscious mind can.
- Another preference of mine is using affirmations when I get out the shower and I am moisturizing my body. I love to use body image affirmations aloud while I moisturize my body, because it is a great way for people, like myself, who may have body dysmorphia or suffer with body image issues. Combine Your Affirmations with Other Techniques
Another way to enhance the effectiveness of your affirmations is to combine them with other techniques, such as visualization, meditation, or journaling. These techniques can help you to deepen your connection and understanding of your affirmations, and to amplify their impact and results. Here are some examples of how to combine your affirmations with other techniques:
- Visualization: This is the process of creating a mental image of what you want, as if it is already happening or achieved. You can use visualization to complement your affirmations, by imagining yourself living or experiencing your affirmations. For example, if your affirmation is “I am a great speaker”, you can visualize yourself giving a successful and engaging speech, and receiving applause and praise from the audience.
- Meditation: This is the practice of focusing your attention on a single object, such as your breath, a sound, or a word. You can use meditation to enhance your affirmations, by repeating them silently or aloud as your meditation object. For example, if your affirmation is “I am calm and peaceful”, you can meditate on this phrase, and feel the calmness and peace in your body and mind.
- Journaling: This is the act of writing down your thoughts, feelings, or experiences. You can use journaling to support your affirmations, by writing them down, or by writing about how they make you feel, or how they have helped you. For example, if your affirmation is “I am worthy and deserving of love”, you can write it down in your journal, or write about how you have shown or received love today, or how you have overcome any doubts or fears about your worthiness.
You can also use other techniques, such as affirmations cards, stickers, posters, or wallpapers, to help you remember and use your affirmations. The key is to find a technique that suits your style and preference, and that makes you feel good and positive.

Here are some variations to Visualizations and Journaling that I would recommend:
Visualization with Vision Boards
Vision boards are a visual representation of your goals and dreams. They serve as a daily reminder of what you’re working towards and can be incredibly motivating. To create a vision board, gather images, quotes, and anything else that represents your aspirations. Place your affirmations on the board to reinforce the visual imagery with positive statements. CHECK OUT THIS ARTICLE ON HOW TO CREATE A VISION BOARD AND ALSO GET SOME FREE VISION BOARD TEMPLATES.
Here’s how to use vision boards effectively with affirmations:
- Choose affirmations that align with the images on your vision board.
- Place your vision board somewhere you’ll see it every day.
- Spend a few moments each morning and evening visualizing your affirmations coming to life.
Journaling with the 369 Method
The 369 method is a manifestation technique that involves writing down your affirmations three times in the morning, six times in the afternoon, and nine times in the evening. This method helps to embed your affirmations into your subconscious and keeps your goals at the forefront of your mind throughout the day. CHECK OUT THIS ARTICLE ON THE LEARN EVERYTHING ABOUT THE 369 METHOD.
To use the 369 method with your affirmations:
- Decide on a clear and concise affirmation.
- Write it down three times in the morning to set the tone for your day.
- Write it six times in the afternoon to maintain focus.
- Write it nine times in the evening to reflect on your day and reinforce your intentions.
Conclusion
Affirmations are a powerful and simple way to improve your happiness and well-being. They can help you to change your negative thoughts, beliefs, and habits, and to create a positive and empowering mindset. They can also help you to achieve your goals and dreams, and to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
But affirmations are not magic. They are not enough by themselves. You also need to take action and make positive changes in your life, in line with your affirmations. You need to be consistent and persistent, and to believe in yourself and your affirmations. You need to be open and receptive, and to trust the process and the outcome.
If you do these things, you will see amazing results from your affirmations. You will feel happier, more confident, and more optimistic. You will attract more opportunities, abundance, and success. You will have more positive and supportive relationships. You will have more health, vitality, and energy. You will have more peace, joy, and fulfillment.
You will become the best version of yourself. Remember, you are amazing, and you deserve the best.
